Founded in 1999 by Argentina's first female winemaker, Susana Balbo, Dominio del Plata has grown in national and international markets and is known for the variety of wines it produces. Located in the Lujan de Cuyo region of Mendoza, Dominio del Plata produces four lines of high-end wines: Crios, Benmarco, Susan Balbo and Nosotros. Today the Dominio del Plata team also includes Susana's two children, José and Ana.
Before founding Dominio del Plata Susana spent 20 years working as a consultant winemaker in Argentina and all over the world. Her first winery job was in the province of Salta in the north of Argentina where the varietal Torrontes flourishes. Susana was put in charge of working with Torrontes and is credited by some for perfecting a certain style that showcases a floral nose with ripe citrus flavors.
In addition to its Torrontes, Dominio del Plata's Malbec, Chardonnay, and high-end blends have earned accolades from wine critics around the world. The Benmarco Expresivo is a Mendoza style blend that earned 92 points from Robert Parker for the 2009 vintage.
Tours are accepted by reservation only. The winery also includes a new restaurant Osadia de Crear, which offers a full grourmet sit-down option. Visitors can also opt for a selection of finger foods paired with a bottle of wine that can be enjoyed at your leisure as a picnic on the winery's property.
