Hidden away in a picturesque corner of enormous vineyards, Achaval Ferrer is one of the most visited wineries in Mendoza. It achieved huge international fame as it began to score some of the highest points for an Argentine wine in Wine Spectator and with Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Most recently, Wine Spectator named their Finca Bella Vista on of the 10 best in the world for 2012 - a first for an Argentine winery.
The opportunity to try some of the highest scoring wines in Argentina is irresistible to most, as is the chance to perhaps see Santiago Achaval, the founder, and one of Argentina’s most awarded and poetic winemakers.
The winery was constructed in 2006, a simple but modern building with large windows that give a perfect view of the vineyards with the mountain backdrop. Nearby, visitors can see picturesque old vines and olive trees, and the gardens are a delight in the summer.
The tour ends with a tasting of three of their red wines, and also their sweet dessert wine and homemade olive oil. Wine to try: Their Achaval Ferrer Dolce dessert wine is made by partially dried Malbec grapes that makes for an intense sweet wine that is irrestistable to most.
It is super-perfumed with aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, floral notes that despite its youth it is already revealing complexity.
